Running On Empty

Ever have days (maybe weeks…) where you just don’t feel inspired or motivated to do ANYTHING…?
  • It’s a real feeling, and yes, it hits all of us from time to time…

This can come from a variety of things in our lives;

  • Physical exhaustion (too much work, lack of sleep)
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Career/Social pressure
  • Sometimes, just dealing with people… (people will wear you out!)

But what if it’s something else…

  • How’s your spiritual life?
  • Sometimes when we hit that wall, it’s really a spiritual drain

I personally believe we are built a lot like rechargeable batteries…

  • When we are fully charged, we’re ready to go full steam…
  • But, then everything we encounter drains a little from us
  • And all of those “little drains”, has a cumulative effect
  • And pretty soon, we’re running on empty…

And when you get that “running on empty” feeling, you will try anything to get recharged…

  • Exercise (nothing wrong with that)…
  • Sleep (you could probably use a few more zzz’s)…
  • Food (well… you got to eat!)…
  • Going out having fun with friends (you should go have some fun!!)…

While all of those things may make you feel a little better and energized…

  • They can all leave you “running on empty”
  • So, what’s the answer?

James 4:8 says it best:

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

  • You have to get the Spiritual batteries back in the charger!!
  • You have to get you some real Jesus time!!

Jesus has the answer (don’t He always!!)

  • Break away from all the stuff in your life…
  • Schedule in time for prayer, reading The Word, and worship
  • Go to church…
  • Fellowship with Christians…
  • Don’t make this a chore or burden…
  • Do it because you want to, because you need to…

Don’t take my word for it… listen to Jesus!!

  • I want to share this verse from The Message Bible
  • I needed it this week, and I believe you do to…
Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message)
‘“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.
I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Spend a little time with Jesus and get recharged and refilled!

Blessings,
Pastor Daniel Bigham
